I had lunch yesterday with a dear friend of mine who had the good fortune of spending several days in India at the compound of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. She was able to practice both seated and walking meditation with him, in addition to hearing daily lectures. One of the main teachings that popped out at me as she recounted what she had learned was his emphasis on practicing “mental hygiene.” According to the Dalai Lama, us Westerners have become quite adept at physical exercise, but the way we are exercising is creating more mental turbulence instead of equanimity. He underscored the importance of practicing meditation in order to pacify the mind, and he noted the interdependence of a calm mind and a well-functioning body.
One of my favorite things about Hatha yoga is that the whole practice is a moving meditation. I love my reclined pranayama practice and my seated meditation practice as well, but since most of us are so sedentary in our daily lives, it sure seems convenient and efficient to integrate mind, body, and breath while doing active poses on the mat. So if you’ve been a little delinquent in your yoga practice recently, why not re-commit yourself to “entering your own peace.” We have new classes on the schedule that are waiting for you to attend! Just note, however, that tonight’s classes have been cancelled due to Halloween festivities. Additionally, tomorrow’s 9:00am and 12:00pm classes haven been cancelled for studio maintenance and repair. Other than those interruptions, we’re open for you to come back to balance!
One more thing, I just wanted to say thanks to everyone for your patience while we’ve converted over to our new web site and sign in system. Everything seems to be running smoothly now and I’d bet we would all agree that the conveniences far outweigh the initial few hiccups. As a token of appreciation, we are now issuing a .25 credit to your account for each time you sign up on-line for class. I know that sounds meager, but it will add up quite quickly and you’ll be able to apply that credit toward future class passes and any of our retail items. Same goes for the referral cards too! You get an automatic $5 credited to your account each time one of your friends comes in to redeem their free class card. We’re hoping that you get into the new habit of pre-registering on-line for class so that we can ensure adequate space for everyone in the room. If it turns out that you cannot attend the class, you’ll still have up to two hours before the class starts to “early cancel.” Please know that we are not trying to seem too harsh by charging for late cancellations. We are simply trying to make sure that everyone has enough space and can use all of our fun props.
Thank you so much again for your support. Hope to see you soon!
