Back Care Bonanza
“All too often our so-called strength comes from fear, not love; instead of having a strong back, many of us have a defended front shielding a weak spine. In other words, we walk around brittle and defensive, trying to conceal our lack of confidence. If we strengthen our backs, metaphorically speaking, and develop a spine that’s flexible but sturdy, then we can risk having a front that’s soft and open.”
-Roshi Joan Halifax
I love this quote from Roshi Joan Halifax because it highlights the way that contemporary culture embodies fear and isolation rather than love and connection. Her plea to strengthen our back so that we can open our front seems like a viable first step to creating civil conversations and healing some of the fractures in our polarized society. Of course, as a practitioner of Hatha yoga and firm believer in the indivisibility of body and mind, I would like to change her phrase, “metaphorically speaking,” to “literally speaking.” But maybe I’m just nit-picking! In any case, come join Emilia Aguinaga this Sunday, August 26 from 11:30am-1:30pm for an opportunity to rejuvenate and heal your back. Titled Back Care Bonanza, this workshop will introduce you to surefire techniques for bringing relief to your tight, aching back. Using the Yamuna Body Rolling system, which is a brilliant self-care practice, you will recover space and length in your body by stimulating bone, releasing myofascial adhesions, and opening joints.
Hope to see you in class soon!
