I don’t know about you, but the rampant consumerism of the holiday season always makes me a little uncomfortable. If the yoga practice keeps urging us to look inwardly for contentment, how then are we to reconcile ourselves to the incessant message from advertisers that happiness can only be found outwardly through the accumulation of more products? I know that the giddiness I feel after receiving a brand new Saints windbreaker is fleeting. I also know that the calmness I feel after practicing yoga is a temporary state of affairs. If I attach myself to either sensation, I am bound to experience frustration. So how in good conscience could I possibly propose for you to buy some of our retail items as gifts for loved ones? Isn’t that blatant hypocrisy? My answer is that everything we have for sale here is a tool for body/mind presence… Ok, except for the tee shirts and tank tops — those just look cool. But here’s a list of the few things that I use on a daily basis and why I think that the presence that they evoke would make for good presents:
1) Young Living Essential Oils
Lavender is incredibly calming and balancing. Peppermint is stimulating and helps ease indigestion (perfect for when you over-indulge on holiday comfort food!). Purification clears stale air and makes you feel awake.
2) BKR Water Bottles
To me, the sensation of drinking high-quality filtered water out of glass is beyond comparison. The silicon sleeve prevents the thing from breaking. The small mouth prevents me from spilling water down my shirt while I’m in the car.
3) Jade Yoga Mats
The texture of these mats is grippy enough for me to find true stability in my standing poses. When I am stable in my legs and secure in my feet, I feel present in my body and less anxious in my mind. Of course these are the same mats we use at the studio, but if you’ve been practicing for a while, isn’t it time you bought your own? 🙂
4) Green’s First
I am officially spoiled by Elizabeth Fahey’s fresh organic juices that she delivers to the studio on Tuesdays and Thursdays. But when she’s not around, I enjoy the alkalizing and cleansing benefits of this simple powder that delivers the nutritional value of 15 servings of fruits and vegetables when mixed with water.
5) Eye Pillows
I almost feel inauthentic teaching you guys corpse pose without one of these because I use it every day when I practice conscious relaxation. The gentle pressure on the eyes helps to quiet the brain and soothe the nerves. A useful antidote to stress.
Of course if none of these products suit your fancy, you could always give your loved ones the experience of presence in the form of an FSY gift card. Click on the big button below to buy one of our recommended gift cards or simply customize your own dollar amount.
We won’t have any extended practices over the weekend because the Advanced Studies/Teacher Training Program will be in full force. But there’s plenty of space in Sunday’s 11am Learning the Ropes class. As usual, you can sign up and pay for that on line by just going to the schedule page on the FSY website. Hope to see you soon!
