“We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
I feel that the quote at the top of this newsletter perfectly epitomizes the sentiment conveyed by the Sanskrit word namaste, which literally means, “I bow to thee.” Sometimes we mumble through it’s utterance at the end of class or say it in a perfunctory manner. Other times we avoid saying it all together for fear that it might not be in accord with our preferred religious/spiritual orientation. But yoga is universal, and therefore the essence concealed by the word is a helpful reminder to us all, especially during these times of social division. The practice of yoga was designed to purify our body/mind in order to unveil our inherent luminosity and remind us of our fundamental interdependence.
If you are feeling overwhelmed by the darkness of the winter days or stressed out by the busy-ness of the holiday season, then you will definitely want to reserve your spot in this Saturday’s AcuYoga workshop that will take place from 1:30-3:30pm. Valerie Viosca is our resident acupuncturist who also happens to be a fabulous yoga teacher. In this unique offering, she combines both skills in order to produce an experience that is decadently relaxing and rejuvenating. Space is limited to only 8 participants so that everyone can have ample space and receive plenty of individualized attention.
Then on Sunday from 1:00-3:00pm, I will be co-teaching another Embodied Mindfulness workshop with Dr. Jose Calderon-Abbo. This collaboration features the gentle movement techniques of Hatha yoga and Qi Gong, in addition to the more contemplative practices of pranayama and seated meditation, to create an experience of wholeness and ease. All proceeds from this event will go directly to Saul’s Light Foundation, which is dedicated to helping meet the special needs of New Orleans families and their babies in the NICU. This workshop is perfectly suitable for beginners because the techniques are simple yet profound. Sign up on-line by visiting www.saulslight.org.
Hope to see you soon!
