Thanksgiving Announcements 2013

“God is the ground we walk on, the food we eat, and the gratitude we express, to no one in particular, as naturally as breathing.”

-Stephen Mitchell

Greetings Everyone!

Thanksgiving is probably my favorite holiday. Most of you already know that about me because I say it every year. And every year I make an internal vow to prolong the immense feeling of gratitude that I feel by awarding prayer a more prominent place in my practice. But somehow it just occurred to me today that while I have gotten slightly better about giving thanks, I still struggle with receiving grace. I’m not quite sure why this is so, but I’ve been noticing that it’s a whole lot easier to give thanks, even if it seems contrived at first, than it is to receive grace, even when it’s abundantly enveloping me. Maybe this has something to do with a deeply ingrained belief that I need to “do” something in order to “get” something? Maybe on some level I just don’t feel like I’m worthy of accepting pure joy? I’m not trying to bore you with my internal conversations, but I operate from the point of view that you and I are a lot more alike than we are different. And so perhaps you too experience some of these conflicts. In any case, alls I knows is that the yoga practice gives me a reliable laboratory in which to investigate these complex questions through the concrete medium of the body. This year I’m going to call the holiday “Gracereceiving,” and I plan on praying through the simple acceptance of my inhales.

If any of that resonates with you, or if you’re just looking for an activity that’s going to help you feel lighter and clearer after the big feast, than I cordially invite you to attend an extended practice that I’ll be leading on the day after Thanksgiving. Join me from 10:00am till noon on Friday, November 29 for a special class that I’m calling “Core Cleanse.” We will practice a nice sequence of hip opening poses in order to prepare ourselves for some deep abdominal twists. The twisting poses are considered to promote healthy digestion for the way they “squeeze and soak” the abdominal organs. What a great way to take care of yourself in the middle of the long weekend!

I am also happy to announce that Claiborne will be teaching an extended practice this Saturday, November 30 from 10:00am till noon that he’s calling “Whole Body Harvest: Cultivating Your Inner Landscape.” Come enjoy an hour of total body bliss on the Yoga Tune Up therapy balls, followed by an hour of traditional asana practice that is suitable for all levels. As usual the cost of the extended practices is $25 and space is limited. So be sure to reserve your spot and pay on line by clicking the big button at the bottom of this newsletter. When you get re-routed to the MindBody sign in portal, just look for the “Workshops” tab in the upper right hand corner and you’ll be good to go.

Oh, and regarding the modified public class schedule during this Thanksgiving week, remember to check on line to see what’s been cancelled. We’re open all day today and all day on Wednesday. So take a break from shopping and chopping tomorrow and pop in for Jen’s midday 2+ class or Cheryl’s feel good flow class at 5:45pm! Happy Thanksgiving/Gracereceiving. Hope to see you soon!

Take care,
Geoffrey
